What Role Does Diet Play In Treating Cat Bladder Issues?
Diet plays a crucial role in managing and preventing Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease in cats. One of the most effective dietary changes for cats with FLUTD is increasing their moisture intake. Feeding your cat wet or canned food is highly recommended because it contains a significantly higher water content compared to dry food. This increase in moisture helps to dilute the urine, reducing the risk of crystal and stone formation in the urinary tract. Studies have shown that cats on canned diets have a much lower risk of developing FLUTD compared to those on dry diets.
In addition to switching to a wet diet, it's also important to consider the type of food you are feeding. For cats prone to struvite stones, a diet low in magnesium and phosphorous is often recommended to help dissolve existing stones and prevent new ones from forming. Many commercial cat foods are now formulated to reduce the likelihood of struvite crystal formation by adjusting the mineral content and promoting an acidic urine pH.
