Storm Anxiety - Preparation
Preparation is key to managing storm anxiety. In this module, we talk about how to create a safe place in your home for your pet!
Imagine being scared and having no place to hide—it's a terrifying thought, right? That's how your dog might feel during a storm. A safe space can make all the difference. This could be a crate covered with a blanket, a quiet bathroom, or even a cozy corner in the basement. The goal is to create a spot where your dog feels secure. Introduce this space to them before storm season and encourage them to use it. Think of it as their personal storm bunker—safe, quiet, and comforting.
Storms bring a lot of sensory chaos: loud thunder, bright lightning, and shifting atmospheric pressure. Reducing these stressors can help your dog stay calm. Closing curtains blocks out lightning flashes, and background noise like a fan, white noise machine, or classical music can help drown out thunder. Many dogs also benefit from calming products like Thundershirts, which provide gentle pressure, or noise-reducing earmuffs. It's all about creating a calmer environment where they can relax. In some cases, medications may be required, but consider these non-medication options prior or in combination with medications.
Preparation is key to managing storm anxiety. Keep an eye on the weather forecast, so you know when to start comforting your dog. If using medications, this may help you time when to give the medications so they are their most effective. If you can, lead them to their safe space or offer a distraction like a favorite toy or treat before the storm arrives. Starting early helps prevent their fear from escalating and them feeling overwhelmed.
